Carlota is a custom-designed typeface created by Oscar Yáñez. The typographic design was commissioned by ELLE magazine, Mexican edition, for its 2009 redesign. The typeface was commissioned to be used in headlines and it has two styles: Roman and Italic.
The brief, led by art director Ernesto Moncada, called for a typeface with extremely fine serifs—an attribute he could not find in existing commercial options. He also sought a graphic solution with a strong personality, rooted in the Didone (Modern) tradition and defined by high contrast.
These parameters guided the development of a typeface with refined, whimsical details while maintaining overall balance and harmony, ensuring both elegance and editorial impact.
Ultimately, Carlota became a defining typographic element of the magazine’s redesign, reinforcing its sophistication and establishing a bold, recognizable presence across its pages.
